The rapid growth of electric cargo bikes is forcing planners to reconsider that geometry because a bicycle designed to carry children, groceries or commercial deliveries occupies more space, accelerates differently and requires larger turning areas than the conventional bike around which much cycling infrastructure was designed.

Commercial logistics has accelerated the change. Parcel companies, food distributors and local businesses increasingly use electric cargo bikes for short urban journeys because dense city centres often make vans inefficient: drivers lose time in congestion, struggle to find loading space and spend a substantial portion of the route walking between a parked vehicle and individual destinations. A cargo bike can move closer to the final address and use infrastructure that motor vehicles cannot access, although its efficiency depends heavily on whether the street network can accommodate it.

The problem appears when infrastructure designed for a narrow bicycle becomes a freight corridor. Protected lanes may contain tight bends, narrow separators or waiting areas that work adequately for individual cyclists while creating conflicts when wider cargo bikes begin using them in volume. Two conventional bicycles can often pass one another where two large commercial cargo cycles cannot, while junction designs that require sharp manoeuvres become more difficult when the rider is carrying a heavy load.

Cities consequently need to think about cycling capacity rather than merely cycling provision. A kilometre count can make a network appear extensive without revealing whether its lanes connect logically, accommodate different bicycle types or allow riders to overtake safely. As cycling absorbs a greater share of commercial transport, design standards increasingly need to account for vehicles carrying substantially more weight and volume than the commuter bicycle.

Microhubs can make that network more effective because cargo bikes perform best when they handle the final portion of a journey rather than replacing long-distance freight. A logistics company can bring consolidated shipments to a small urban depot by truck, transfer parcels to cargo bikes and distribute them across the surrounding neighbourhood. The model reduces the number of vans circulating through congested streets while preserving conventional road freight for the part of the journey where it remains efficient.

Finding space for those hubs presents its own planning problem. Logistics operators need sites close enough to customers to make short delivery rounds possible, yet central urban property commands high rents and faces competing demands from housing, retail and public services. Underused car parks, railway arches and sections of existing logistics facilities can provide alternatives, particularly when municipalities treat last-mile freight as infrastructure rather than expecting operators to solve the land problem independently.

Parking requires similar attention. Cargo bikes remove vans from loading bays only if riders have somewhere practical to stop, and leaving large cycles across pavements simply transfers the obstruction from one mode to another. Dedicated loading areas that accommodate both cycles and conventional delivery vehicles can help cities manage the transition while recognising that urban freight will continue to use several modes.

Electric assistance has expanded the range of goods that cycles can carry, although payload still determines where the model works. Parcels, groceries, meals, laundry and many service trades fit naturally, whereas construction materials, large furniture and temperature-sensitive freight may continue to require vans or specialised vehicles. Cities gain more from allocating each journey to an appropriate mode than from treating cargo bikes as a universal substitute for motorised delivery.

Businesses also need to calculate productivity across the whole route rather than comparing vehicle capacity alone. A van can carry far more parcels, but capacity offers little advantage when the driver spends much of the shift searching for parking or walking from a distant loading bay. Cargo bikes carry less while potentially completing a greater number of stops per hour in neighbourhoods where street conditions favour them.

Winter weather, hills and longer suburban distances weaken that advantage, which means geography will continue to determine adoption. Compact European centres with dense populations and extensive cycling networks provide stronger economics than dispersed urban areas where deliveries involve long distances between customers. Electric motors reduce the effect of gradients and payload, but they cannot eliminate the relationship between urban form and logistics efficiency.

As cargo bikes become more common, their riders will also need clearer rules governing interactions with ordinary cyclists and pedestrians. Commercial operators can train employees, monitor speeds and plan routes, while independent couriers may operate under different incentives. Cities can influence behaviour through lane design and enforcement, although infrastructure that forces incompatible users into repeated conflict will remain difficult to manage through rules alone.

The transition reveals how cycling infrastructure changes once bicycles become part of the freight system. A network designed mainly to protect individual riders can remain too narrow or fragmented for commercial use even when it appears successful by conventional measures. Cities that want fewer vans in dense neighbourhoods will therefore need to design for the vehicles expected to replace some of them, which means treating cargo bikes as a transport mode with their own spatial requirements rather than as ordinary bicycles carrying unusually large bags.

Cities globally are rethinking urban design to accommodate cargo bikes, enhancing sustainability and efficiency.
