Westminster, Plymouth, Leicester and Exeter also sit near the top.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>The ranking does not simply <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bousta.com\/fr\/innovation-en-matiere-dinfrastructures\/villes-pretes-pour-le-climat\/comment-les-villes-mettent-en-place-une-defense-numerique-contre-les-vagues-de-chaleur-extreme\/\">record temperature<\/a>. Researchers combined information on buildings, hard surfaces, vegetation, water and other characteristics that determine how much heat a city absorbs and how slowly it releases it after sunset.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>More than eight in ten British cities already show high vulnerability to urban heat islands, according to the analysis. Almost two thirds are projected to reach the most severe vulnerability category by the end of the century.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Cities have always known that asphalt gets hot and trees provide shade. Geospatial data changes the scale at which planners work with the problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>A neighbourhood with little tree cover, tightly packed buildings and large areas of impermeable surface behaves differently from another part of the same city with parks, gardens and water nearby. A city-wide average hides those differences. Street-level mapping exposes them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Heat therefore moves from a weather forecast into infrastructure planning.&nbsp;Councils deciding where to plant trees no longer need to treat every street equally. Planners reviewing a redevelopment site can see whether a project removes permeable land from an area already retaining heat. Housing departments can combine thermal exposure with demographic information to identify residents facing greater health risks during prolonged hot periods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Technology does not cool the street. It tells a city where physical intervention has the greatest value.&nbsp;Milton Keynes offers a useful contrast in the British analysis. Its green spaces, tree cover and permeable surfaces give the city more natural cooling than many denser urban areas. The difference emerged from decisions made long before urban heat became a mainstream climate metric.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Older cities have less room to work with. Narrow streets, buried utilities, heritage buildings and expensive land restrict where planners add trees or open water. Road space already carries buses, bicycles, deliveries, parking and pedestrians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>The data therefore forces prioritisation.&nbsp;Some streets need shade rather than another sensor. School grounds and public squares offer space for trees or surfaces that absorb less heat. Building owners control roofs and fa\u00e7ades. Transport authorities control large areas of asphalt. Water agencies influence drainage and blue infrastructure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>No single smart-city department owns the heat island.&nbsp;Connected sensors add another layer by recording how conditions change throughout a day. Satellite observations show surface temperature over large areas. Ground sensors record the environment people experience closer to street level. Building systems reveal when cooling demand rises. Health and emergency data show where heat produces consequences rather than merely high readings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Cities already collect pieces of that information for separate purposes. Combining them produces a more useful operating picture.&nbsp;Data also exposes uncomfortable trade-offs. A street tree needs soil volume, water and years to mature. Removing parking creates political conflict. Reflective materials alter the appearance of buildings. Green roofs cost money and depend on building structure. Cooling centres help residents during extreme events but do little to reduce the temperature outside.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Heat planning therefore differs from the earlier smart-city habit of buying a technology platform and looking for applications afterwards. The physical intervention remains the product. Data helps choose it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>The summer of 2026 gave European cities another season of high temperatures and heatwaves.
